Fable Viewed As “Vital” To Xbox’s DNA

Over the last few years, XBOX has nixed a handful of games in development with Rare’s Everwild and The Initiative’s Perfect Dark remake come to mind, but through all that, Fable managed to stick around for the last 10 years. Now, we can get the theory as to why from Playground Games co-founder Ralph Fulton.

While speaking to The Guardian, Fulton expressed that “so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform.” In other words, unlike Everwild, which was poised to be a new IP from Rare, who have been working on their live service pirate adventure, Sea of Thieves, for the last eight-ish years, or the remake of Perfect Dark, an N64 classic FPS interestingly developed by Rare, were less tied to the console’s identity than Fable.

“I genuinely think Fable is an important game. What has protected us over a long development cycle is that so many people within Xbox view Fable as vital to the DNA of the platform. I would go a step further and say it’s important to video games as a whole. It offers a combination of elements that simply doesn’t exist anywhere else.”

The above paragraph (excluding the quote above) may sound sarcastic, but frankly, I don’t mean it to; Fable is probably the third most recognizable XBOX franchise out there, only getting beaten out by the two big shooters of the console — Gears of War and Halo. I know for me, Fable 2 was a mainstay game I’d play during the 360 era.

Playground’s Fable might lack a long story, clocking in at only around 20 hours, but it will have more content beyond just the story. Regardless, the game is apparently in good hands and set to launch on February 23.
