Xbox Cancels Perfect Dark, Everwild, Closes The Initiative

Xbox has canceled Perfect Dark as well as Rare’s Everwild, closing The Initiative while they’re at it. We were warned that this week would be an unfortunate week for Xbox fans, with rumors spiraling about mass layoffs.

Xbox exec Matt Booty confirmed (via Variety) the cancellation of the two games and studio closure, citing it as a decision brought on by an effort to adjust priorities and setting their teams up “for greater success” in the industry.

“We have made the decision to stop development of Perfect Dark and Everwild as well as wind down several unannounced projects across our portfolio. As part of this, we are closing one of our studios, The Initiative. These decisions, along with other changes across our teams, reflect a broader effort to adjust priorities and focus resources to set up our teams for greater success within a changing industry landscape.”

At this time, we aren’t sure what sort of “greater success” could be formed by canceling the Perfect Dark remake, though, or closing down The Initiative before they even dropped their first game… or canceling Everwild.
