Former PlatinumGames boss Hideki Kamiya has gone on record to take responsibility for Scalebound, an Xbox One exclusive, getting canned back in 2017. But, he does think things could’ve been different if it was a Japanese publisher
During a chat with VGC, Kamiya was asked about the canceled title, in which he discussed how things could’ve been different under a different — ideally Japanese — publisher, but notes he’s not meaning it could’ve been actually completed, but the process itself could’ve been different. He also took a light jab at publishers outside of Japan for having a “much stronger desire to see a finished product as quickly as possible.”
“I do think it would’ve been different. I don’t mean that if it had been a Japanese publisher, the game would necessarily have been completed and released, but I imagine the process itself would have played out differently. Japanese companies tend to be more open to new challenges, and I think the conversations would have been more positive, like, “Okay, so how should we approach this together? For me personally, overseas publishers seem to have a much stronger desire to see a finished product as quickly as possible. If it had been a Japanese publisher, I feel they might have given us more leeway.”
Heading up CLOVERS now, Kamiya does want to revisit Scalebound, but with Xbox going the route it is, we aren’t gonna hold our breath.
