A big world to explore was provided in Bethesda’s latest release, Starfield, it was largely bogged down by a massive abundance of loading screens. These loading screens even shocked former Bethesda staff — and former Starfield developer — Nate Purkeypile.
Speaking with Video Gamer, Purkeypile expressed that while he worked on the project, which he left in 2021, those loading screens were not there and when picking up the final product, he was surprised by the sheer abundance of them. Now, loading screens are pretty commonplace in game development, even as consoles continue to rise in their capabilities.
Generally speaking, the loading screens are not the problem, but rather the overabundance of them that make it feel dated, and part of that is due to the Creation Engine’s hard limitations.
Credit where credit is due, though, despite middling reception from critics and fans alike, Starfield continues on with extensive updates fixing small bugs and adding new content, such as drivable vehicles and mod support on consoles. Oh, there’s also its DLC, Shattered Space.
