A rumor has popped up indicating Microsoft is working on an Xbox Series successor with a target of 2027. This was bundled into a report on Keenan, Xbox’s handheld set to debut later this year.
Windows Central reports Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella greenlit the successor and will come offering new controllers, acting as a “premium successor” to the Series X. It’s speculated that third-party storefronts, such as Steam, Epic Games, Itch.io, and GOG, will be supported and this next generation of Xbox will be more akin to a PC than ever before.
Technical hurdles aside, it wouldn’t be too far-fetched to consider Microsoft shifting gear toward a new console, as while it’s open about losing the console war and releasing exclusives to PlayStation as a means to boost profit, Xbox as a brand is still important and having dedicated hardware for it just makes the most sense.
This is a rumor, though, so take things with a grain of salt.
