Rare Is Working On Multiple Projects
As you all probably know, XBOX has continued hitting that Reset button with more layoffs, and transitioned Rare’s parent from under its Xbox Game Studios banner to Activision, who will now have the final say on its future. They’re even working on “other projects.”
As reported by The Game Business, it’s up to Activision on whether these various projects actually go through. Now, of course none of the projects have any details about them, but that’s neither here nor there.
“Rare is behind Sea of Thieves. The pirate game has been a decent success, but it has been declining over the last few years. In 2025, Rare’s Everwild project was cancelled, which led to some redundancies. However, the studio was able to mitigate that by cutting back on outsourcing, and moving staff onto Sea of Thieves. As a result of its Activision move, there have been a few cuts to Rare’s central operations team. The studio is working on other projects.“
In case you missed it, back in last year, Matt Booty confirmed the cancellation of Rare’s project, Everwild, their first new game since starting their high seas ongoing development journey on Sea of Thieves. With this change in ownership to being a division of Activision, alongside World’s Edge, this could be a big opportunity for the developer, especially as the sea-faring adventure has been waning over the years.
