Physint May Have To Use New Engine

For those who haven’t been paying attention, XBOX is now publishing Physint, Hideo Kojima’s Metal Gear spiritual successor following PlayStation pulling out of the publisher role. Now, it sounds like the game, which was gonna need “five to six” more years, as Kojima put it last year, is probably gonna be on the path for a new engine.

In a Forbes report, it’s claimed that Kojima has lost access to Sony’s proprietary Decima Engine, the engine that’s powered both Death Stranding, its sequel, and was gonna be used on Physint. Meanwhile, OD, his XBOX-backed project, would use Unreal Engine. What will likely happen is Kojima will have to pivot direction to use Unreal for both projects, as I don’t think XBOX has an engine that would be better suited for the style of game Physint plans to be.

The goal of Physint is to basically make your mom think you’re watching a movie. To accomplish this, he was relying on Sony Pictures and their subsidiary, Columbia Pictures. Again, that has fallen through, but the biggest blow is certainly the engine. Decima has become a lot better largely thanks to Kojima and his feedback, it’s seen as able to handle visual fidelity that other engines, like Epic Games’ Unreal Engine, chugs to keep up with.
