Microsoft is stamping out its long-running Movies & TV service, which allowed people to purchase and rent films. The service has been around under this name for the past decade.
On their support page (via The Verge), Microsoft confirms that the service has closed down, though, people can still access already purchased products. At this point, it isn’t clear why they are shutting the service down.
“Microsoft has stopped selling new movies and TV content. You can still access your previously purchased content on Windows and Xbox devices.”
Out of pure speculation, this decision feels kind of like a way for Microsoft to shave costs, which considering the recent layoffs, it wouldn’t be too shocking. Microsoft started selling movies and TV shows back in 2006 as Zune Marketplace before replacing it with Xbox Video and then Movies & TV in 2015.
